Why Corten steel
The rust is the finish.
Corten is a weathering steel. Its rusty surface seals the metal underneath, so it doesn't rot through like thin hardware-store steel. No paint, no sealer — just time outdoors.

Arrives grey
New steel starts a dull steel-grey, sometimes with light orange spots.

Turns orange
Rain and sun bring up a bright rust colour over the first weeks.

Deepens to brown
Over 6–12 months the patina settles into a rich, even brown.

Lasts for decades
Once settled, the patina protects the steel. Nothing to maintain.
Tip: while the patina forms, rain can carry rust stains onto light paving or concrete. Stand new pieces on soil, gravel or mulch for the first few months.
